India has a number of book publishers who publish books and ebooks in English and different Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil etc. In this article we mention a few of them, focusing on English language publishers for now. Please note that there are many more publishers, this list is by no means exhaustive.

Traditional publishers

Traditional Indian publishers of books include the following: Penguin India, Hatchette India, Jaico, Rupa, Roli Books, Harper Collins, Orient Longman, and many others. Some of the publishers might be focused on specific niche domains, such as Amar Chitra Katha and Pustak Mahal for children’s books, Arihant for competitive exam books, Prentice Hall for textbooks and Gita Press for spiritual books. There are also specific publishers for Indian languages, such as Rajpal and Sons for Hindi language books.

To publish with one of these publishers, one needs to send their manuscript to them and go through a vetting process before they agree to publish the book.

Self-Publishing Publishers

Self-publishing means that authors can themselves take part or whole of the responsibility of various stages of the publishing process: designing, distributing and marketing their books. Their vetting process is typically minimal.

Some of the self publishing companies are as below:

Notion Press publishing

Notion Press (https://notionpress.com/en) is a good site for publishing print books in India. It has support for multiple Indian languages. They have their own free web based tools for publishing and designing book covers etc. The price for self-publishing a book varies from free (if the author uses their free tools and designs the book by themselves, includes book distribution to Amazon and Flipkart) to packages which range from Rs 4990 to Rs 35990 plus GST, depending on the level of service needed by the authors. At the moment they do not support e-books.

Pothi.com

Pothi.com (https://pothi.com/) is a publisher which is good for self-publishing, focusing on Print on Demand or POD. The book is only printed if it is ordered, else there is no waste. It can be useful, for example when the number of copies of the book are low and one wants to distribute early copies of the book among their friends and select readers. They also have their own web-based tools for book design, and support a number of packages from free to paid, with prices depending on the number of services used, such as book distribution on Amazon and Flipkart. It also supports multiple Indian languages as well as E-books in multiple languages, which are sold as PDF files.

Other India-based self-publishing companies

There are also a number of other good Indian companies for self-publishing one’s books. Some of them include the following (one can search in Google or quora for a more comprehensive list)
